The Friends of Oakwood Cemetery will offer a tour of the Gardner Earl Chapel on Friday, Aug. 30 at 2 p.m. and again at 3 p.m.
Participants pay $10 per person — cash or check — upon arrival. (Use Oakwood Avenue entrance to the cemetery). Children under 12 are free. No advance registration is needed. The Earl Chapel is handicap accessible.
The 19th century Gardner Earl Chapel l is a National Historic Landmark, known for its spectacular stained glass windows and for its opulent interior of mosaics, marble, onyx and carved oak. Guests will hear the story of the young man who inspired this amazing building and get a peek at one of the old cremation retorts.
The Friends next event will be an Adult Scavenger Hunt on Friday, Sept. 13; $15 per person. Call (518) 329-0090 to register.
The Friends of Oakwood is a 501(c)3 non-profit volunteer group working to support the preservation and maintenance of the non-sectarian chapel and grounds of Troy’s still-active historic 19th C. Oakwood Cemetery. New volunteers are always welcome.
